Ordu – Fetal DNA Testing in Pregnancy: Early Diagnosis for a Safer Pregnancy
Op. Dr. Uğur Ekinci: “The fetal DNA test is an important screening method for the early detection of chromosomal abnormalities,” he said.
Op. Dr. Uğur Ekinci, Obstetrics and Gynecology Specialist at Private Ordu Sevgi Hospital, explained that the fetal DNA test performed during pregnancy analyzes fetal genetic material from a blood sample taken from the mother, allowing the detection of significant chromosomal anomalies.
He stated that “this test enables early detection of genetic disorders such as Down syndrome (Trisomy 21), Edwards syndrome (Trisomy 18), and Patau syndrome (Trisomy 13). It can be safely applied from the 10th week of pregnancy.”
Dr. Ekinci emphasized that the fetal DNA test carries no risk compared to invasive procedures and added, “This is a screening test. In suspicious cases, invasive tests may be needed for a definitive diagnosis. Therefore, it must be performed under the supervision of a specialist physician.”
Finally, he said that “early diagnosis greatly facilitates pregnancy management and helps families make informed decisions, and it is very important for expectant mothers to consult with their doctors on this matter.”
