Ordu – Cataract and Smart Lens Applications Improve Visual Quality

Op. Dr. Ferhat Önder, an Eye Diseases Specialist at Özel Ordu Sevgi Hospital, stated that cataracts—commonly referred to as “clouding of the eye’s lens”—are especially prevalent in the elderly and gradually reduce vision quality.

“Patients typically present with light sensitivity, impaired night vision, and blurry sight. The condition progresses slowly, so vision loss may not be immediately noticeable,” he explained.

Dr. Önder noted that in cataract surgery, the cloudy natural lens is removed and replaced with an artificial one. “Thanks to modern smart lenses, patients can achieve clear vision at far, near, and intermediate distances, significantly reducing or even eliminating the need for glasses.”

Emphasizing that each patient’s eye structure and lifestyle are unique, Dr. Önder said lens selection must be personalized. He also added that cataract surgery is a safe procedure performed under local anesthesia in a short amount of time.
